Man Utd stance on Declan Rice emerges after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward meeting | Football | Sport

Manchester United remain interested in West Ham star Declan Rice following a meeting between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward.

The Red Devils were linked with the England international during the transfer window but, ultimately, the player stayed at the London Stadium.

Manchester United’s midfield has been left short following the recent exits of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera, with both players yet to be replaced.

And the Manchester Evening News say United retain an interest in Rice amid their struggles in the middle for the park.

Solskjaer and Woodward supposedly met to talk about possible transfer targets for next year.

And Woodward may allow the United manager to sign a midfielder when the window reopens in January.

It is claimed, though, that a move for Rice is unlikely despite their interest in the West Ham star.

The Red Devils finished the summer with a net spend of £60.4million.

Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James were brought in from Leicester, Crystal Palace and Swansea respectively.

But the club pocketed a massive £73m from Romelu Lukaku’s move to Inter Milan.

That means United have funds at their disposal to use this winter – but it remains to be seen who they sign.

Meanwhile, former Premier League star Noel Whelan can see the Red Devils bidding a huge amount for Rice.

“West Ham have got a really special player on their hands,” he told the BBC.

“They will struggle to hold on to him, because the big clubs will be hot on his trail.

“I think Declan Rice could be the next player who goes for a Premier League record fee.

“We have just seen Harry Maguire go for £80million and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rice goes for more than that, above £90m, even.

“He’s young, English, hugely talented and is such a long way from his peak.

“You look at a team like Man Utd, who need a midfield anchorman and you can see it happening.

“They don’t mind paying over the odds for a player, as we saw in the summer. I could see them looking to get Rice in January.”
