Leeds news: Chief heaps praise on Marcelo Bielsa and squad after coronavirus wage gesture | Football | Sport

Leeds United players have agreed to take a wage deferral for the foreseeable future, the Whites have confirmed. The decision means that all non-football staff at Elland Road and the Thorp Arch training facility will get paid during the league’s coronavirus suspension.

The suspension of the league season is set to have a major financial impact on the EFL’s football teams, and those in the lower divisions, too.

All football has been suspended in England in a bid to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus infection.

But, the temporary halt to the EFL season has meant that the club is missing out on gate money, as well as revenue from commercial sales.

Leeds have now confirmed that the players accepted to a temporary wage deferral to help the overall financial running of the club.

“My players have demonstrated an incredible sense of unity and togetherness and I am proud of their actions,” said Orta.

“To Marcelo and his staff, and all of the players, we thank them for putting our wider team first and taking care of family.

“Now we must focus on public health, and when the people are safe, finish what we started. Vamos carajo.”

The entire Leeds first-team squad also release a joint statement, claiming that the club is a family, which is why they agreed to the salary cap.

“This is the culture that has been created by everyone at the club, from the players and the board to the staff and the supporters in the stands,” the statement read.

“We face uncertain times, and therefore it is important that we all work together to find a way that the club can push through this period and end the season in the way we all hope we can.

“In the meantime, let’s work as one to listen to the government advice and the health service and beat this virus.”
