PSG confirm Mauricio Pochettino appointment as ex-Tottenham boss replaces Thomas Tuchel | Football | Sport

PSG have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel last month. Pochettino takes a managerial job for the first time since he was sacked by Tottenham in November 2019. The Argentine moves to Paris on an initial one-and-a-half-year contract with the option of a further year. PSG currently sit third in Ligue 1, one point behind leaders Lyon.

Pochettino spent two years as a player at PSG between 2001 and 2003, making almost 100 appearances for the club.

Upon signing his contract, Pochettino told the official PSG website: “I am really happy and honored to become the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain.

“I would like to thank the Club’s management for the trust they have placed in me.

“As you know, this club has always held a special place in my heart.

PSG are the fourth club Pochettino has managed in his career.

He had three years in charge at Espanyol between 2009 and 2012 before becoming Southampton boss in 2013.

His performance at St Mary’s attracted the attention of Tottenham, where he came manager in 2014.

Pochettino spent almost four years in north London and led Spurs to the 2019 Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool.

PSG lost in the final of the Champions League last season, going down 1-0 to Bayern Munich in Lisbon.

The club’s chairman and chief executive Nasser Al-Khelaifi believes Pochettino is the right manager can to continue to progress on the pitch.

“We are very pleased to welcome Mauricio Pochettino as first team coach,” said Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman and CEO of Paris Saint-Germain.

“I am proud to see our former captain returning to Paris Saint-Germain, as the Club has always remained his home.

“The return of Mauricio fits perfectly with our ambitions and it will be another exciting chapter for the club and one I am positive the fans will enjoy.

“With the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, Paris Saint-Germain is committed to continue to build and move the club forward over the coming years.”

Pochettino’s first match in charge will be away at Saint-Etienne on Wednesday, before his first home game against Brest three days later.

PSG will face Barcelona in the last-16 of the Champions League, with the first leg at the Nou Camp on February 16.
