The earthquake struck at 23.07 local time (14.07 GMT). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.1.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated: “An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude 7.1 occurred near the coast of Honshu, Japan at 14:07 UTC on Saturday February 13, 2021.

“Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.”

According to NHK News, the Tohoku Electric Power Company has stated nearly 70,000 households across Fukushima, Miyagi, and Niigata are without power as of 0:30 a.m local time (15.30 GMT).
