France has reported 4,644,423 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, according to the latest figures, which is the fourth-highest number of cases for any country in the world.

Daily cases doubled to about 40,000 this week, prompting widespread concern.

There have been 95,640 Covid-related deaths, which equates to a fatality rate of 2.06 percent.

So far, 8,004,958 people have been vaccinated against the virus.

Despite the vaccination efforts, health authorities in France confirmed almost 5,000 patients were in intensive care with COVID-19 on Monday, which is higher than the peak seen during the second lockdown in mid-November.

Of those in intensive care, 44 percent of people with Covid were aged under 65.
