Today Little Mix members Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock appeared on Capital FM to discuss their latest track, Confetti. Host Roman Kemp couldn’t help but ask about the missing member of the group, Jesy, who left the band in December 2020. The band announced Jesy’s exit on their official Twitter account at the time and Jesy commented: “The truth is recently being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health.”
Roman asked the band: “Look, we have to talk about it, I mean this is… it’s odd. It’s even odd for me.
“I’ve known you girls for so long and seeing you come in here today… Jesy is obviously no longer part of Little Mix, I mean how did it feel for you girls to kind of come to that decision. I mean, was it uniform?”
Jade replied: “Yeah. I think, you know, if someone’s heart isn’t in it anymore and they don’t want to do it, we would never… we’re never going to force each other to do anything we don’t want to do, and we supported that decision.
Perrie added: “Of course,” before Jade went on: “And yeah, it is, it was very strange thinking about doing this as a three but we weren’t ready to give it up.”
Perrie quickly replied: “We haven’t! We actually haven’t!”
Going forward, the band are continuing as a three-piece for the first time ever, and the first glimpse of how that will look arrived this week.
The band released their single, Confetti ft Saweetie, which comes from their recently released album of the same name.
Roman asked why they chose the song as the next single from their album, prompting Perrie to reply: “Oh that’s a good question. I feel like because it was the first song that we had for the album.”
Perrie continued: “We based the whole record around it and we called it Confetti, it just felt right to close the era with it.”
Leigh-Anne added: “We always knew we were going to close the era with Confetti.”
Perrie went on: “But we knew we didn’t want to just release the album track, we wanted to switch it up, change the production a little, get a feature (hoping it was going to be Saweetie), and then when it was we were like ‘oh my goodness!’”
While Confetti shows how the band will look going forward, no information has been given on what kind of music Jesy is working on at the moment.
When Jesy quit the band she told her followers: “I need to spend some time with the people I love, doing things that make me happy.
“I’m ready to embark on a new chapter in my life – I’m not sure what it’s going to look like right now, but I hope you’ll be there to support me.”
The band themselves said in a separate statement: “After an amazing 9 years together Jesy has made the decision to leave Little Mix. This is an incredibly sad time for all of us but we are fully supportive of Jesy.
“We love her very much and agree that it is so important that she does what is right for her mental health and well-being.”
