Deadline day RECAP: Chelsea sign Saul, Griezmann moves, Arsenal and Spurs transfers done | Football | Sport

Transfer deadline day: Premier League round-up

Premier League clubs had until 11pm on Tuesady night to finalise their squads for the first half of the season – and there was plenty of business done throughout the day. Chelsea were trying to bring in a new centre-back and were in talks with Sevilla for Jules Kounde – and although a deal never materialised for the Frenchman, they did bring in someone else…

The Blues have also been negotiating with Atletico Madrid for midfielder Saul Niguez after he was offered to a host of clubs – and landed their man just 15 minutes before the midnight extension deadline.

Tottenham signed Emerson Royal from Barcelona while Odsonne Edouard completed a move from Celtic to Crystal Palace.

Arsenal have made a disastrous start to the campaign as they are cemented to the foot of the table having not scored a single goal in their opening three matches.

They did, however, sign Takehiro Tomiyasu in a bid to sort their shaky defensive woes.

12.15am: Griezmann and De Jong DONE

And there we go, deals done! La Liga confirm that the paperwork for Antoine Griezmann and Luuk de Jong has been received in time.

They posted on Twitter: “No extension was handed by #LaLiga. The Griezmann and De Jong transfers were submitted on time to the LaLiga Manager platform. Once submitted, documentation for each transfer has to be revised by LaLiga.”

Griezmann rejoins Atletico Madrid on loan in a deal which includes an obligation to buy the Frenchman next summer.

De Jong joins Barca as Griezmann’s replacement from Sevilla.

11.55pm: Carter the Celt…

Another deal that flew under the radar, but Celtic have signed Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan, the club have announced.

The defender is not in Nuno’s plans and is free to leave – heading north of the border to sign for Ange Postecoglou’s men, who lost Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie today for a combined £16.5m today.

The deal is subject to a medical, but it represents brilliant persistence from Celtic who were linked with the defender throughout the summer.

11.50pm: One down, two to go

Well, now that Saul’s transfer is out of the way, that leaves just Antoine Griezmann and Luuk de Jong’s transfers to complete.

Fabrizio Romano claims they’re done – now we must wait on the official word from both clubs.

Standby as we watch Barcelona’s third-most expensive player move back to his old club for £70m less than they bought him for just two years ago…

Saul

A deal for Saul is done, claim reports (Image: GETTY)

11.45pm: SAUL ANNOUNCED

Better Call Saul – he’s arrived!

The Spaniard signs for Chelsea on a season-long loan worth £4.2m, with the option to make it permanent for £34m.

It represents a great deal for Chelsea, who now have a top talent in midfield who has experienced it all. Rest, Chelsea fans – you have your man.

11.40pm: A bit of Everton news…

It isn’t transfer news as such, but there is something that Everton fans may be happy about – James Rodriguez is staying at the Blues for the foreseeable future.

Rafa Benitez seemingly didn’t have him in his plans – but, after failing to sign Luis Diaz and with Gylfi Sigurdsson still not with the club, the Colombian may just force his way into Rafa’s plans over the next six months or so.

He hasn’t played infront of a full Goodison Park – that may (and probably will) change over the coming months.

11:30pm: Saul done and dusted, reports say…

Another twist in the tale – as various sources have said that the deal to take Saul Niguez to Stamford Bridge is DONE.

The midfielder will sign on an intial loan with an option to buy at the end for £30m – just awaiting confirmation…

11.20pm: Nuno Mendes signs for PSG

Nuno Mendes has signed for PSG to mark a big coup for the French side.

The left-back signs on an inital £7m loan deal, with an agreed £34m (€40m) purchase available in June 2022 should PSG decide to activate it.

Manchester City were also interested, but PSG have got their man.

11.10pm: Helder Costa signs for Valencia

Perhaps a forgotten transfer, but Leeds’ winger Helder Costa has gone on loan to Valencia just after the deadline closed.

The Angolan-born Portugal international has played a bit-part role at Leeds over the last year, and the arrival of Dan James will have halted his progression even more.

11.10pm: Late move at Spurs?

No, it isn’t Adama Traore – but in fact a potential departure from Spurs to Celtic, in the form of Cameron Carter-Vickers, according to Sky.

The Celts have been linked with Carter-Vickers throughout the summer, but have failed in a bid to sign the America international prior to today.

Whether a deal will be done remains to be seen, but the Scottish window closes at 12. This one will go right down to the wire.

11.05pm: Deals still not confirmed – will they happen?

Salomon Rondon may have been announced, but there is growing doubt that Griezmann, de Jong and Saul’s transfers will go through – as Saul’s incomplete move could have a lasting effect on the other two.

According to Guillem Balague, Saul’s transfer not being completed as of yet will have major implications in the transfer window.

His failed move would stop Griezmann’s move away from Barca to Atletico, which in turn would mean that Barca wouldn’t need de Jong…wow!

11.01pm: Everton sign Salomon Rondon

Everton have had all summer to sign Rondon, and leave it to the first minute after the deadline to announce his signing. Better late than never, eh?

The Venezuelan signs on a two-year deal with the option to extend for an extra year, where he links up with Rafa Benitez on Merseyside.

He previously played under Benitez where he became a fan favourite at St. James Park – and the Spaniard will be hoping he does the same.

11.00pm: TRANSFER WINDOW SHUT!

And that, is that…will the remaining deals get over the line?

Edouard

Odsonne Edouard has completed a move to Crystal Palace (Image: GETTY)

10.55pm: FIVE MINUTES TO GO!

Remember, clubs can still complete deals two hours over the deadline with special dispensation.

10.50pm: Aurier – Au revoir confirmed…

A transfer of sorts – but, again, it isn’t a transfer.

Following the arrival of Barcelona’s Emerson Royal, alongside Nuno Espirito Santo’s preferance for Matt Doherty, Serge Aurier has been granted a free transfer in order to find a club.

It is yet to be seen where he will go, however, Barcelona might be looking for a right-back…

10.45pm: Tomiyasu announced!

Finally, we have Arsenal’s man! Takehiro Tomiyasu has been announced by the club’s website.

The Japan international signs on a four-year deal, with the option for a fifth, for a fee of just £17million.

Adept at right-back and centre-back, this is an astute signing from Mikel Arteta. You can breathe now, Arsenal fans…

10.40pm: Potential spanner in the works…?

Could Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann’s deals to and from Atletico Madrid are in the balance – as Diego Simeone’s side cannot complete the deal for the Frenchman without the sale of Saul.

Chelsea are supposed to be signing the Spaniard on loan for £4m, but according to Catalan TV outlet RMC, the deal may be faulting – not ideal with 20m to go…

Griezmann could end up staying at Barcelona after all.

10.30pm: Newcastle won’t land Leicester lad Choudhury

Newcastle have had arguably the worst transfer window in the Premier League.

Signing only Joe Willock – who they had on loan last season – and letting squad members such as Christian Atsu, Andy Carroll, Florian Lejeune and Matty Longstaff go, the Magpies are weaker than when they set off.

That could have changed with the loan signing of Hamza Choudhury from Leicester – however, various reports have stated the transfer is off, leaving fans reeling at Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley.

10.25pm: Wolves wanted £50m for Adama Traore

What does £50m get you nowadays?

I haven’t bothered to do the old ‘Cadbury’s Freddo’ comparisons that used to be made back in the days of old, but there is a lot more value in them than paying £50m for the Spaniard.

According to David Ornstein, Wolves rejected a £30m bid yesterday from Tottenham for Traore – and as ex-boss Nuno registered his interest in the winger today, the west Midlands outfit  wanted £50m for the pacy winger – which Spurs laughed at and left.

10.15pm: Fulham look to sign trio

It’s gone a bit quiet on the transfer front for most teams – but not Fulham, who are looking to bring in three new additions in the next 45 minutes, according to The Athletic.

Matt Grimes, Domingos Quina and Nathaniel Chalobah are the players in question – with the former being the least likely.

Chalobah and Quina are going down to the wire – let’s see if they come to fruition…

10.00pm: ONE HOUR TO GO…

I wonder what this hour will bring us, eh?

Saul, Tomiyasu, Griezmann, Mendes and Rondon all left to be done – plus any other surprises…

Let’s get down to business.

9.50pm: Edouard over the line

Another deal over the line – and Odsonne Edouard’s move to Crystal Palace from Celtic is finally complete.

The striker has signed a five-year deal on a reported £70,000 per week (9:30pm), announced via the very chant he was christened with at Celtic – the Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored”.

The move means Palace have now brought in Edouard, Marc Guehi, Michael Olise, Joachim Andersen, Will Hughes and Conor Gallagher this summer – which is arguably the best transfer window of any Premier League club.

Griezmann

9.45pm: Bellerin es un Betico!

Hector Bellerin has finally joined Real Betis, the club’s official account has cryptically tweeted.

The right-back, 26, joins on loan for the season after struggling for game time at the Emirates Stadium.

It is a breath of fresh air for the full-back, who could face Celtic in the Europa League group stages should he play against the Hoops.

9.35pm: Au Revoir Aurier?

Spurs are in talks to completely terminate Serge Aurier’s contract, according to French outlet RMC.

Aurier joined Spurs for £23m in 2017 from PSG, although he struggled to make an impression in the first-team.

And, after Spurs bought Emerson Royal from Barcelona on deadline day, there may be no room left for Aurier – hence his departure.

9.30pm: Edouard agrees five-year deal with Crystal Palace

In one of the biggest deals yet to be completed before the deadline, Odsonne Edouard has agreed a five-year deal with Crystal Palace, according to Sky Sports.

The south London outfit have agreed a fee of around £15m with Celtic for the Frenchman, who will earn £70,000-per week with add-ons once he completes the move.

Edouard scored 88 goals in 179 appearances in his four-year stint at Celtic Park, and will look to test himself in the Premier League.

9.25pm: Millwall set to land Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo

A report by the Athletic’s Caoimhe O’Neill understands that Sheyi Ojo is set to move on loan to Millwall.

The midfielder has been loaned out every year since 2017, and that looks set to continue in east London.

Ojo endured a fruitful loan last year at Cardiff, scoring five goals in 41 league appearances.

9.15pm: Did Griezmann’s arrival spell the end of Messi’s tenure at Barcelona?

Not really transfer news as much, but Express Sport cannot believe the amount of money Barcelona have lost in this deal.

£70m in two years, and not counting the obscene wages they were paying Griezmann – if they hadn’t spent this money, would they have been able to keep Lionel Messi?

One to ponder…

9.05pm: Griezmann? Here we go!

A return to the Wanda Metropolitano for Antoine Griezmann, it seems!

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Frenchman is headed back to the Spanish capital just two years after he left for Barcelona.

It has been a dour two years for Griezmann at the Camp Nou – although much can be attributed to the financial chaos that plagues the Catalan club.

The striker joins on a loan-to-buy option, with Diego Simeone’s men able to exercise that option for just £34m – after joining Barca for £104m just two summers ago.

What a piece of business by Atletico!

8.50pm: Lyon fail in move for United defender

Reports coming out of France are that Lyon have made a move for Manchester United defender Eric Bailly; albeit unsuccessfully.

The Ivorian has been shunted down the pecking order following the arrival of Raphael Varane, although is considered a valued squad member at Old Trafford.

The French outfit considered a move but it was too complicated, instead opting for Jerome Boateng.

8.45pm: Runarsson moves to Belgium

Forgotten Arsenal keeper Alex Runarsson has joined Belgian outfit OH Leuven on loan, the club have confirmed.

He was second choice to Bernd Leno prior to Aaron Ramsdale’s arrival – although the England stopper’s arrival has virtually ended that.

8.40pm: Donny denied loan deal?

A report coming out of the Netherlands has suggested that Donny van de Beek was denied a loan move to Everton – but was denied by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Dutchman has been isolated in terms of game time at Old Trafford, thanks in large part to Solskjaer – and his agent claims he is blocking every move.

“Today I have been trying to find a club for Donny. Everyone knows the situation. We worked very hard for it, but the club is blocking everything. There was much interest from Italy, Germany & England.”

A move could have been in the offering, however, he looks set to stay – despite Rafa Benitez’s advances.

Bellerin

8.40pm: West Ham announce Kral

David Moyes’ side have added to their Czech continent – with more ‘Czech mates’ for Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek – by adding Alex Kral to their ranks.

The midfielder joins on a loan to buy deal from Spartak Moscow as the Hammers look to continue their brilliant form this season.

However, with no striker on the cards, the club will have to rely on Michail Antonio not to become injured – unless something happens soon.

8.35pm: What now?

Just over two hours to go now, and a whole host of deals are still up for completion. Most notably, Chelsea’s deal for Saul Niguez is the Premier League’s biggest deal.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Takehiro Tomiyasu awaits a move to Arsenal – although deals elsewhere seem to be at a minimum.

On the continent, Nuno Mendes and Antoine Griezmann dominate the headlines as they look to move to PSG and Atletico Madrid respectively.

8.30pm: Wolves despair

Wolves were in talks for Boubacar Kamara and Keiffer Moore as the deadline approached – however, with little time left, the club will not be completing deals for either of the pair.

Talks for the pair have broken down according to Sky – with Cardiff wanting £12m for Moore, and Kamara not completely convinced on a move to England.

Elsewhere, Morgan Gibbs-White has gone out on loan to Sheffield United.

8.25pm: United done for the day

Manchester United have wrapped up their transfer deadline day almost three hours before the deadline, according to reports – signalling that no midfielder will sign for the club.

The club have added Cristiano Ronaldo to their ranks officially today, whilst Daniel James has departed for Leeds for a fee of £28m.

However, with fans desperate for a midfielder, it appears there will be no more incomings – meaning it will be at least another six months until a new man can enter.

8.20pm: Leeds winger Costa heads for the Costa del Azahar

Leeds winger Helder Costa is set to leave on a season-long loan to Spanish outfit Valencia, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Portuguese winger signed for Leeds last summer for £17m, however has made just 23 appearances for Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds have just added Daniel James to their ranks, thus forcing Costa out of the club.

8:15pm: Everton move for Diaz collapses

Everton’s pursuit of Luis Diaz has completely collapsed, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Colombian winger, 24, is set to stay at FC Porto after a deal could not be completed between the two sides.

It was thought James Rodriguez could be used as a makeweight in the deal, however it appears that deal is now definitely not happening.

8.05pm: Bellerin close to Betis move

Arsenal have got rid of a right-back, and it isn’t Ainsley Maitland-Niles…rather, Hector Bellerin, who has reportedly moved on loan to Real Betis.

The Spaniard has spent seven seasons in Arsenal’s first-team, but after being ostracised from Mikel Arteta’s plans, he has found a new home in Seville.

Maitland-Niles looks set to stay after talks with Arteta, and may make the right-back berth his own.

7.55pm: Christie deal done

A deal involving Ryan Christie’s transfer from Celtic to Bournemouth is done, the club’s official website has announced.

The Scottish international, 26, had a contract at Celtic Park until January, but with a £2.5m bid, the midfielder is on his way to the south coast.

Scott Parker will be delighted that he has signed Christie in his bid to achieve promotion with the Cherries.

7.45pm: Kounde deal NOT happening…

Huge news coming out of Stamford Bridge! Chelsea have been in talks with Sevilla defender Jules Kounde throughout the transfer window, but won’t sign their target, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Despite selling three key centre-back options in Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi, the club have not been able to close a deal for the ex-Bordeaux defender.

It appears Thomas Tuchel will stick to his guns in the coming months – will a deal be done in September?

7.45pm: Griezmann in Atletico return?

Barcelona striker Antoine Griezmann may just make a move back to Atletico Madrid, after Sky sources claimed talks between the two sides are nearing completion.

The Frenchman, 30, scored 133 goals in 257 games for the capital outfit, before departing for Barcelona just two years ago.

Howver, after a less than desirable spell in Catalonia, he is reportedly nearing a move back to the Wanda Metropolitano.

7.35pm: Wolves look to hijack Newcastle bid for Frenchman

We brought you news before (5:45pm) that Newcastle had made a bid for Boubacar Kamara – however, Express Sport’s Ryan Taylor has reported a spanner in the works.

Marseille defensive midfielder Kamara is also on Wolves’ radar – but he wants to stay at OM and will need convincing.

Newcastle have made a late loan offer that includes an option to buy the 21-year-old, who can also play in defence.

7.30pm: Berahino returns to England

Remember him?!?

Former West Bromwich Albion starlet Saido Berahino has returned to England for Sheffield Wednesday after two years in Belgium, where he scored 12 goals in 54 games.

However, the 28-year-old has been given a lifeline in South Yorkshire to reignite his career in England.

Lookman

7.25pm: De Jong in late Barcelona bid?

Dutch striker Luuk de Jong may be on his way to Barcelona in a late move, if reports by Helena Condis are to be believed.

The journalist claims that there is ‘quite a chance that a move will be done’ for the 31-year-old striker, who currently plays for Sevilla.

He certainly wouldn’t be a replacement for Lionel Messi – but he would be a handful for most La Liga defences.

7.15pm: Wolves looking for Moore options

Pardon the pun – but Wolverhampton Wanderers could be in for a late move to sign Cardiff City striker Keiffer Moore, according to the Telegraph.

The Welsh international, 29, joined Cardiff last August, and has immediately impressed for the Bluebirds – scoring 21 goals in 49 games.

It remains to be seen on a fee – but keep your eye on this one.

7.10pm: City’s Doyle off to Deutschland…

This in from Express Sport’s Gideon Brooks…

“Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle is to go out on a season long loan to German top flight side Hamburg.

“The highly-rated teenager, 19, who made his first-team breakthrough last season, remains in City’s long term plans, but the Premier League Champions feel Doyle needs exposure to more regular first team football.

“Several Championship clubs had expressed an interest but City view the Bundesliga as the perfect environment for his development.”

7.05pm: Martial turns down French move

Manchester Utd striker Anthony Martial has reportedly turned down a move to French side Olympique Lyon in order to fight for his place at Old Trafford, according to L’Equipe.

The talisman, who struggled at United over the course of last season, is even further down in the pecking order due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival and Mason Greenwood’s form.

However, his reluctancy to leave has indicated his determination to succeed in Manchester.

7pm: James speaks out

Dan James has explained why he swapped Manchester United for Leeds today, insisting to Sky Sports: “I think for me, my football career, it was completely the right decision.

“Don’t get me wrong I had an unbelievable time and made great friends.

“The staff were amazing to me and the fans. For me it’s my time to move on career-wise and moving forward. I’m looking forward to it.”

6.50pm: Chelsea’s Saul deal explained

Saul will join Chelsea on an initial loan deal which gives the Blues the option to sign the Spaniard permanently next year.

Sky Sports News say a deal has been agreed between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid with the 26-year-old eager to move to England.

Saul has made over 300 appearances for Atletico and has previously been linked to Manchester United and Liverpool.

6.40pm: Another Celtic exit

With Odsonne Edouard expected to join Crystal Palace today, Celtic are also set to lose Ryan Christie to Bournemouth.

The Scot, in Denmark with his national team, is poised to join the Cherries for around £2.5m per Sky Sports.

It is thought Premier League clubs had shown interest in the attacking midfielder before he chose to join Bournemouth instead.

6.30pm: Spurs sign Emerson Royal

Tottenham have kickstarted their deadline day business with a deal for Barcelona’s Emerson Royal, the north London club have announced.

The Brazilian, 22, has signed for Nuno Espirito Santo’s team in a deal which could reach £25.7m as they look to adapt to the Portuguese boss’ style of play.

However, the club face a race to sell Serge Aurier in a bid to reduce the numberes in their defensive department.

6.20pm: Mbappe deal OFF – after PSG reject £188.9m bid for the Frenchman

Amazing, isn’t it? Kylian Mbappe has been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer – and even after a bid of £188.9m was made, the French club turned it down, says Kaveh Solhekol.

This would have made Mbappe the second and third-most expensive footballer in the world, after Neymar in first – but astonishingly PSG have rejected the offer.

This leaves Mbappe free to leave PSG for Madrid next summer – as he can agree a pre-contract agreement in January with Los Blancos.

6.15pm: Saul nearing Chelsea move

Wow, wow, wow! Chelsea are finally getting their midfield maestro in Saul, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Atletico midfielder has been a key part of the Spanish champions’ midfield for half a decade, but will now try his trade at the European champions.

The Blues will reportedly pay Diego Simeone’s men a fee of £4.3m (€5m) for the Spaniard, with Saul on his way to London.

6.05pm: Liverpool loan out youngster Williams alongside new contract

Liverpool starlet Rhys Williams has joined Swansea City on a season-long loan – and signed a new five-year deal in the process.

The centre-back, 20, was thrown into the deep end for the Reds last season following the injury crisis that engulfed the Merseyside club.

And, after some stellar performances, the Preston-born defender has been loaned out to Wales after being given reassurances about his long-term future.

6.00pm: Leicester land Lookman loan

Leicester have confirmed the loan signing of RB Leipzig’s Ademola Lookman, the club have confirmed.

The winger spent last year on loan at Fulham, excelling for Scott Parker’s men in their unfortunate relegation.

Eduardo Camavinga has joined Real Madrid on a six-year deal (Image: GETTY)

6.00pm: Celtic sign Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis

Celtic have hit double figures in their transfer incomings this summer, with talisman Giorgos Giakoumakis joining the club.

The top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, Giakoumakis joins the Hoops on a five-year deal for a fee of around £2.5million.

With Odsonne Edouard likely to be leaving the club for Crystal Palace before the deadline comes, Celtic have moved quickly for his replacement.

5.55pm: Tomiyasu to sign four-year contract at Arsenal

Arsenal’s impending transfer deadline day signing Takehiro Tomiyasu will sign a four-year contract with the option of a fifth, according to Sky.

The Bologna defender will sign for the Gunners for a fee of just over £15m before the deadline, after considerable interest from Tottenham earlier in the window.

And, at the age of just 22, it is clear that Arsenal are focusing on youth this summer – alongside the signings of Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Martin Odegaard.

5.45pm: Newcastle make offer for Boubacar Kamara

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle have made a loan-to-buy offer for Marseille starlet Boubacar Kamara, according to Loic Tanzi.

The Magpies have reportedly offered a £2.15m (€2.5m) loan offer for the Frenchman, with an option to buy for £12.88m (€15m) at the end of the season.

5.35pm: Real Madrid announce the signing of Camavinga

Real Madrid have announced the signing of Rennes prodigu Eduardo Camavinga on a six-year deal.

5.30pm: Brighton sign Sima

Brighton have announced the signing of Slavia Prague striker Abdallah Sima for an undisclosed fee.

He will be loaned straight out to Stoke City as a result of the transfer.

5.25pm: Maitland-Niles set to stay at Arsenal

Ainsley Maitland-Niles looks as though he will remain in north London, according to the Mirror.

However, after talks with Mikel Arteta, the 24-year-old will remain at the Emirates for the time being.

5.20pm: Burnley offered chance to sign Juventus midfielder McKennie

What on earth is happening at Turf Moor recently?!

After being linked with Ross Barkley (3.45pm), signing Connor Roberts (1.45pm) and breaking their transfer record for Maxwel Cornet on Sunday, the Clarets have reportedly been offered Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

Sky’s Kaveh Solhekol suggests the Clarets’ have offered a loan deal for the American star, however it is understood that Juventus would be unlikely to accept that deal.

5.15pm: Dani Olmo has ‘no chance’ of moving to Barcelona

Barcelona have been let down in their pursuit of Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo after his club RB Leipzig announced he was not for sale, says Fabrizio Romano.

The ex-Barcelona playmaker, 23, will not be leaving the Red Bull Arena as the German side look to keep hold of one of their main assets.

5.10pm: Housssem Auoar set to stay at Lyon

Arsenal and Tottenham’s pursuit of Lyon’s Houssem Aouar looks set to drag on to the next transfer window, according to David Ornstein.

The midfielder, 23, has been linked with a move to north London in recent years, but appears set to stay at the Groupama Stadium.

That isn’t to say a move won’t happen in the future for the one-time capped Frenchman – with only two years left on his contract, a move in the next year could be on the cards.

5pm: PSG set to win chase for Mendes

Paris Saint-Germain have seemingly won the race to sign Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Mendes is closing in on a move to PSG after agreeing personal terms with the Ligue 1 giants.

4.30pm: Project CR7 in full flow?

With Daniel James now a Leeds United player, the number 21 shirt is now free at Manchester United.

Interestingly, Edinson Cavani wears that shirt for Uruguay and could inherit it for the remainder of the season at Old Trafford.

If he’s allowed to do so, it would free up the iconic number seven shirt for its previous owner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

4.20pm: James joins Leeds from Man Utd

Leeds United have completed the signing of Manchester United winger Daniel James on a permanent deal.

James has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Elland Road in a deal worth an initial £24m.

3.45pm: Burnley consider late Barkley pursuit

Burnley are considering a last-ditch move for Chelsea outcast Ross Barkley, according to Express Sport’s Ryan Taylor.

Any move would be a loan, with Barkley likely to be open to the idea after being stripped of his number eight shirt earlier this summer.

3.30pm: Chelsea optimistic over Saul deal
