Italy news: Port staff clash with police over mandatory covid passport | World | News

Workers in the Italian port city of Trieste have clashed with police during a mass protest against the introduction of mandatory Covid passports on Monday. Italy‘s stringent new Covid law required Italians to produce on request a “green pass” detailing they have either received a negative test, been fully vaccinated, or recovered from the virus in the last six months. The health status card is now mandatory in order to access restaurants, shops, public transport, and workplaces across the country.

The No Green Pass Trieste group on Sunday urged all members to assemble at the Gate 4 entrance to the port area to “oppose by all means necessary” attempts to shut down the protest.

The group has insisted they plan to “continue the garrison at the Port of Trieste, which has become a point of reference for many people, in Trieste and elsewhere.”

At least 2,000 people are estimated to have gathered at Gate 4 which is the main assembly point for the demonstrations.

Footage from the frontline of the protests shows a large contingent of Italian police beating back protesting workers gathered at the entrance to the port.
