Footage of the explosion circulated on social media in the early hours of this morning. One video appears to show the aftermath of the deadly blast and the havoc it has already wreaked on the Chinese city.
A woman can be heard in distress while the camera pans around to the rubble and destruction that followed the incident.
Dashcam footage has since been shared showing the explosion.
In the 19-second clip, smoke and dust quickly clogs up the sky as parts fall from adjacent buildings.
According to local reports, the explosion occurred at around 8.20am (1.20am BST).
Officials have since said one person died and 33 sustained injuries following the blast.
It has been said all 33 casualties were rushed to hospital.
The Mirror reports at least 110 emergency service personnel and 25 fire pumps were deployed to the restaurant, located on Taiyuan South Street in Shenyang’s Heping District.
According to the Daily Star, officials have since released a statement that said: “Many shops and residential buildings in the surrounding area were affected.
“After the incident, public security and fire fighting in Heping District, Emergency, Urban Construction, Xinhua Sub-district Office, gas power supply and water supply and other relevant departments have rushed to the scene for emergency response.”
It has been claimed the province’s emergency response authority took to social media to declare investigators have “preliminarily determined that the explosion occurred within a commercial and residential building”.
Shenyang, the capital and largest city in China’s coastal province of Liaoning, has a population of around eight million.
Last month, Liaoning’s city of Dalian recorded a separate explosion that saw eight people killed and another five left injured.
