Russia suffers heavy losses on Snake Island as air defence wiped out | World | News

Footage has emerged of Ukrainian forces using remote aerial technology to target and destroy Russian Navy ships. Ukraine’s defence forces have focused on Russian ships stationed around Zmiinyi Island, better known as Snake Island, a Russian-held area of Ukrainian territory. The footage displayed a series of huge explosions, recorded from above, as the chosen targets were completely obliterated.

The destruction was celebrated with cheers from the Ukrainian fighters who observed the attack.

War Studies PhD student Rob Lee shared the footage online, commenting: “I think the sinking of the Moskva may have caused the Russian Navy to keep its ships farther away from Snake Island because of the threat from Neptun missiles.

“But Russian forces on the island were depending on air defense coverage from these ships.”

The Moskva, the Russian warship used to invade Snake Island, had become a symbol of Russian military strength in the war.

The flagship of the Black Sea Fleet was sunk in April as part of a Ukrainian missile attack. Russian officials claimed the ship sank after a fire in stormy seas rather than credit Ukrainains attacks.

Russian forces have been stationed on and around Snake Island since February when Putin’s military captured the area.

The small number of Ukrainian troops that were positioned as defence on the Island were initially reported dead but were revealed to have been captured and imprisoned by the Russian military.

Ukrainian forces have launched an intense military campaign to recapture the territory as part of the ongoing defence against Russian invasion.

The troops holding the Island were heavily reliant on air defence coverage from the supporting ships meaning Ukrainian recapture of the region is now more accessible.

The technology used by the Ukrainian military has been identified as a TB2 UCAV (an unmanned combat aerial vehicle.

This advanced technology enables Ukrainian forces to remotely control the attacks without risking the life of a pilot placed on the aircraft.

The destruction of the two navy boats is the latest advance in the Ukrainian strategy to snatch Snake Island back from Russian control.

The movement of Russian Navy ships further from the island is a characteristic move of Putin’s forces.

Russian leaders have developed a reputation of abandoning Putin’s largely conscripted military troops.

Previous leaked recordings from Russian soldiers have captured troops slating the cowardice of their military leaders as they were deserted by their captains on the frontline.
